Gasoline is not a rust preventative so a unsealed tank will rust from the inside. A sealed tank sometimes is a bandaid for poor welding and a poorly cured sealer will mess with your carbs but then again so will rust. Having the choice I would seal my tank if I knew it was going to be done right.
What is the best fuel tank sealer?
Gold Standard Fuel Tank Sealer, from the makers of KBS Coatings, is a superior, single-component, ready-to-use fuel tank sealer. How do you line a gas tank?
How to Reline a Gas Tank
- Remove any remaining connections from your tank ( fuel lines, sensors or vent covers).
- Mix the water and muriatic acid in a glass or plastic container.
- Pour the mixture into the tank, and cover the fill hole with duct tape.
Are tank sealers worth it?
It is worth spending the few extra bucks to get it done right ( tank seal kits cost almost as much as the radiator shop job described above). Both of these cost about $10 or less and are much lower risk than trying to coat the interior of the tank yourself.
Does fuel tank sealer work?
A: No. Fuel tank sealer should be used as a last resort, and is not always necessary. Fuel tanks that are rust-free and have no pinholes or leaks may not need sealing at all. They should, however, always be kept full of gasoline, which prevents condensation and further rusting.
